Who We Are
Brent has recorded his testimony concerning God's call on his life to become a cross-cultural missionary, which can be read here.
Brent is an artist at heart. He is passionate about art, music, creative design, teaching, and reading. He aspires to one day author and illustrate a children's book he is currently drafting.
Brent is also deeply in love with his beautiful wife, "Yam," who he married in 2014. Their first child, Micaiah Shepherd Burke, was born in the late fall of 2015.
Emanuel Brent Burke
was born in Athens, Georgia, and raised in Canton, North Carolina. He graduated from Fruitland Baptist Bible College in Hendersonville, NC with an Associates Degree in Religion/Church Ministries in 2014.
His parents have been faithful Christians and members of a local body of believers from his earliest memories.
Though Brent confessed to know Jesus Christ at a young age, it is his understanding that he did not become a Christian until some time between the ages of 18 and 21.
While attending a private high school is his hometown, he took a Theology and Church History course under the tutelage of Professor Jason Smith. Smith had been teaching the history of the Protestant Reformation and their beliefs, when Brent began to be concerned of the validity of his conversion. Though at first angry with Reformed theological concepts, he eventually began to search the Scriptures for himself. By the end of his senior year of high school, Brent was convinced that he was unworthy of the saving work of Jesus Christ. He knew his sin debt to be impossible to pay with legal toil.
As Brent grew more aware of his wickedness, contrasted with the holiness of God, he became more greatly convinced of his need of rescue. He eventually found, or rather, was found by, the love and mercy and grace of Jesus Christ. Jesus arrested Brent's heart and made him alive!
Through many challenges, and many failures, Brent has been walking in repentance and faith by the power of the Holy Spirit. This has been evidenced in his love of Scripture, the family of God in Christ, his faithful attendance to local Church gatherings, and his leadership over his household. His highest ambition is to see his King, Jesus Christ, worshiped in spirit and truth by people all over the world, especially in Thailand, by being a faithful servant.
Chanokporn "yam" burke
was born in Bangkok, Thailand, where she lived for her first 6 years. Her parents moved to the United States in 1997. She grew up in upstate South Carolina and Northeast Georgia. She graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Therapy.
Yam came to faith in Christ after a couple of years of first hearing the Gospel at a local church in Central, SC. Her non-Christian parents allowed her to visit this local church through a relationship with Yam's elementary school friend, Rachel. She is deeply grateful for friends, like Rachel, who share about Jesus with their friends.
Yam seeks to communicate why she's a Christian to her non-Christian family, friends, and even strangers. She follows Christ only because she believes that He is King over all the earth. Before becoming a Christian, Yam was enslaved to sin and an enemy to God her Creator. Now, God's Spirit lives in Yam and is transforming her to be more like Jesus Christ her Lord.
Yam is passionate about being a godly wife and mother. Her and Brent would like a large family of 3-5 children. Yam is gifted with great administrative skills and logistical coordination which she uses in her household and work place at the Hendersonville Rescue Mission. From meal planning to event planning, she enjoys working with logistical details and most of all, people. Her spiritual gifts include giving and hospitality. When she's not at work coordinating volunteers and accomplishing office projects, Yam can be found playing with her son, Micaiah, or cooking and cleaning. She counts it a joy to serve Christ at home, workplace, and church. Yam looks forward to serving Christ in her home and ministry context in Thailand as well.
